The Role
Dispatch is the center of this company. You run a board of drivers hauling 53’ dry van freight over the road in all 48 states — loads from our direct customers and the spot market, drop-and-hook where it fits — and you keep every truck loaded, legal and on time.
We dispatch the way we recruit: straight with the driver. Each driver names the area they least want to run, and dispatch keeps them out of it as much as possible; home time is planned into the schedule. You join a Chicago dispatch team with 5 to 10+ years in the seat, covering 24/7. Pay is 3% of the gross you dispatch, or a salary — agreed in person.
What You’ll Do
- Plan and dispatch loads for your board of trucks across all 48 states
- Book freight from our direct customers and the spot market, and negotiate rates with brokers
- Line up the next load before the current one delivers, so trucks don’t sit
- Plan around hours of service, appointments and each driver’s home time
- Keep each driver out of their least favorite area as much as possible
- Stay in contact with drivers on every load — check-ins, reloads and problems on the road
- Handle breakdowns, delays and detention with maintenance, roadside support and the customer
- Keep loads and statuses current, and get rate confirmations, BOLs and PODs to billing on time
- Work with track and trace, safety and maintenance to keep every truck moving and legal
What You Bring
- Truck dispatch experience preferred
- Working knowledge of hours-of-service rules
- Comfortable negotiating rates with brokers
- Calm, clear and decisive on the phone — especially when a load goes wrong
- Organized enough to run a full board of trucks at once
A Plus, Not Required
- Dry van OTR experience
- DAT, Truckstop or other load board experience
- Samsara or another ELD platform
